“The Application Of Air Power”
Chief Of The Air Staff’s Air Power Conference
Defence Academy, Shrivenham
6-7 November 2008
The theme for 2008 is “The Application of Air Power”. It will explore how air power can best be applied to meet the challenges of a complex world. The first day will establish the context, looking at the implications of the National Security Strategy and examining developing threats and likely causes of tension. However, not all of the issues that air power will need to address will be caused by potential adversaries. As a high-technology, carbon emitting force requiring skilled manpower, the RAF will have to respond to environmental legislation, financial constraints and demographic changes in the years to come, while proving its relevance and affordability. Its position in society, and how society sees it, will be key in this debate. Having established the framework, the second day of the conference will ask what this means for the application of air power in current operations, and what capabilities need to be maintained or developed for the future.
This programme offers a tremendous opportunity to understand the RAF’s future direction. While interest in the conference would be expected at station executive level and above, CAS is keen to engage and debate with interested individuals across the entire rank structure and broad attendance should be encouraged. There will be no charge for the conference, but accommodation is limited and attendees should expect to meet overnight accommodation and travel arrangements from within their own UINs.
Detailed arrangements, including registration, will be released shortly. In the meantime, initial interest should be elicited and the conference dates noted. The conference was originally scheduled to take place at the RAF Museum, Hendon between 16-17 July 08, but diary pressure resulted in a slip. The location and dates are now confirmed as the Defence Academy, Shrivenham, 6-7 November 08 and diaries should be amended accordingly.
